1st European earth building gathering, July 8th-9th 2016, Lyon

AsTerre, the French national association for earth building, will hold its 6th seminar, on July 8th-9th.
We dedicate the 2016 edition to the European network, so it will be an international seminar this year! Delegates from 13 European countries will be with us.
CRAterre-ENSAG is a co-organiser.

The entrance theme of the presentations and discussions will be earth building training, with the ECVET Earth building and Learn•Earth tools. This international event on the subject is building on some of the conclusions of the UNESCO chair seminar TerraEducation held in Grenoble in 2010 and on the work done by European earth building associations and their partners form vocational training and higher education since 2002, for example during the LearnWithClay and the PIRATE projects.

A new website is under construction and will offer free download of tools by July: https://ecvetearth.hypotheses.org.

The two aims of the seminar are

- to disseminate the ECVET Earth building units of learning outcomes and assessment practice
- to enhance the existing informal networking that is actively happening in Europe
- to allow for use of the tools beyond Europe

Open and collaborative work sessions in the afternoon program give room to think about tools or actions we need for more communication and sharing on an international level.

TERRA Award: awards ceremony on July 14, 2016

First international prize for contemporary earthen architectures

Awards ceremony on Thursday, July 14, 2016 held at the Palais des Congrès of Lyon, as part of the closing of the Terra 2016 World Congress.

Earth is becoming increasingly popular in contemporary architecture: hundreds of projects of high aesthetic and technical quality are emerging across five continents. This material, which has low embodied energy, is readily available and appropriate for participatory buildings. It could help provide a solution to the needs for ecological and economical housing.

To enable both professionals and the general public to fully appreciate this building material, the following partners have taken the initiative, under the auspices of the UNESCO Chair “Earthen architecture, construction cultures and sustainable development”, to launch the first international prize for contemporary earthen architecture: the Labex AE&CC-CRAterre-ENSAG Lab research unit, the amàco project, the Grands Ateliers, the CRAterre association and EcologiK/EK magazine.

Wang Shu, 2012 Pritzker architecture prize laureate, is the president of honour of this TERRA Award, the trophies for which will be presented in Lyon on July 14, 2016 at the Terra 2016 World Congress.

« LYON 2016, Capitale de la terre » Major event around earthen architectures

From February till December 2016

In 2016, Lyon hosts not only Terra 2016, the XIIth World Congress on Earthen Architecture, from 11th till 14th of July 2016, but also, from February 22nd till July 17th, 2016, the exhibition « Ma terre première pour construire demain » at the musée des Confluences.

We wanted to take advantage of the fact that two special events are held simultaneously in Lyon to organize a major cultural event: « Lyon 2016, Capitale de la terre ».  The program foresees several exhibitions, conferences, round tables, performances, entertainment, but also workshops around earthen architecture, organized by CRAterre and/or partners : l’ENSAG, l’ENSAL, l’ENTPE, l’INSA, the MOM, Archipel Centre De Culture Urbaine, PRA, CAUE 69, CAU38, Asterre, etc.

These manifestations begin in February directly after the opening of the exhibition « Ma terre première pour construire demain »  and will take place until December 2016 in different cultural sites of Lyon, like the musée des Confluences, the musée gallo-romain, the musées Gadagne, at Archipel Centre De Culture Urbaine, but also « Beyond the city walls », in the whole Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
